Another Roundup Lawsuit Filed Against Monsanto over Cancer Claim

A man from Lander, Wyoming recently filed a lawsuit against Monsanto. Monsanto is the company behind herbicide product Roundup. The claimant is alleging that the product caused him to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

What is the reasoning behind the claim?

According to an article from the Casper Star-Tribune, the lawsuit claims that the plaintiff (Jace Florquist) used Roundup regularly from 2008 to 2014. He was also exposed due to a neighbor also using the product in earlier years. Mr. Florquist was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2015. His attorney, Jason Ochs argues that this “was proximately and actually caused by exposure to Defendant’s Roundup products.”

What is the significance of this lawsuit?

This lawsuit follows a similar pattern of arguments found in the past Roundup lawsuits. At least one of those lawsuits netted a huge verdict for the plaintiff (read more about that lawsuit here). The tide has seemingly continued to go in favor of the plaintiffs with another trial about to get underway, had a ruling to allow certain “controversial” evidence (read more about the ruling here). Furthermore, the filing of Mr. Florquist’s suit appears to show the number of people affected by Roundup are seemingly not a small group.

What has been Monsanto’s response?

Monsanto and Bayer AG (parent company of Monsanto) have continued to state that Roundup is safe and have issued statements defending the safety of their product.
