There has been a third trial brought against Monsanto Corporation involving the herbicide product Roundup and claims that it causes non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma is underway in Oakland, California.
What is Roundup?
Roundup is the commercial name for an herbicide, glyphosate, which is marketed as a weed killer used in both mass scale and personal agriculture settings.
Who is involved in the lawsuit?
The plaintiffs are a couple, Alva and Alberta Pillirod who claim that their long term use of Roundup led to them both being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma within several years of one another according to an article posted by U.S. Right to Know . They also claim they were not properly warned about the risks of using Roundup.
What is the significance of this case?
This is the third lawsuit to be heard before a jury and could possibly signal a continuing trend in the plaintiff’s favor. The first two lawsuits involved groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson (read about his case here) and Edwin Hardeman (read about his care here) have resulted in major wins for the plaintiff’s.
Are there other lawsuits pending against Monsanto?
Yes. Monsanto (and their parent company Bayer AG) are facing upwards of 10,000 lawsuits over Roundup. Despite the numerous lawsuits, the company insists that Roundup is a safe product.
