Roundup the commercial weed killer has been making a splash due to individuals who claim the product has caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Beyond the human impact, scientists are also looking at the environmental impact as well.
Roundup The Bees
According to an article from The Guardian that looked at the impact glyphosate (the active ingredient in Roundup) is having on our society, the threat to bees was brought up.
A scientific study was done that looked at how Roundup has affected the chemical process of flowers, which as a result changes how bees are able to pollinate them.
Another scientific study has found that Glyphosate targets a specific enzyme that is found in the intestine of most bees. This enzyme, that was long thought to only exist in plants, contributes to a bees ability to fight disease and leads to premature death.
Monsanto’s Influence
Questions have been swirling about whether Monsanto has tried to influence the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) by providing the agency with false data (read more about that here). In one of the recent Roundup trials, the company made attempts to limit what evidence could be admitted that showed the company’s attempts to sway industry officials about the safety of the product.
The company also continues to run a publicity campaign advocating for the safety of its product by featuring agriculturist families.
