Johnson & Johnson is currently undergoing a voluntary recall with some of its baby powder products after FDA testing showed signs of asbestos in the product.
FDA Finds Samples Positive for Asbestos
According to a Reuters article, the bottle that originally tested positive for asbestos was purchased online and is thought to be from a batch made in 2018. As of now, the number of bottles being recalled is listed at 33,000. Johnson & Johnson has launched their own investigation and is working with FDA officials to determine if the percentage of asbestos found in the samples is an accurate and valid result.
Legal Headache
Johnson & Johnson is facing thousands of legal claims by plaintiffs that the company’s talcum powder products are not safe and have caused individuals to be diagnosed with mesothelioma as well as ovarian cancer. A bombshell report was released by Reuters last year that details the company knew their talcum powder contained asbestos since at least the 1970s, yet continued to market the product to the general public as being safe to use.
With the battle heading to the courtroom, Johnson & Johnson has found itself on the losing end multiple times when it comes to talcum powder verdicts. It remains to be seen how this recall can affect current and potential talc cases against J&J going forward.
