A new scientific study on talcum powder provides additional evidence that the powder may be linked to the development of mesothelioma.
Malignant Mesothelioma
A recent article from Time Magazine, reports on a case study involving 33 individuals that “provides some of the strongest proof yet that exposure to asbestos-tainted talcum powder may cause malignant mesothelioma.” Mesothelioma is a type of terminal cancer that invades the inner lining of lung tissue.
Influence in the Courtroom
A law professor at Rutgers commented to Time that this study could potentially boost the claims of plaintiffs filing lawsuits against companies like Johnson & Johnson, who are facing legal claims that their talc contains asbestos. Asbestos is a known factor in causing the development of cancer.
Future Impact
No matter what happens, one of the co-authors of the study Jacqueline Moline, mentioned to Time that she hopes above all else that the results help bring the issue of asbestos in talcum powder and talc-based products to greater light and that “anything you use on your body or in your body, you want to be careful [about].”
