U.S. Auto Regulators Expand Safety Probe for Airbags

Apr 28, 2019
  • U.S. auto regulators have expanded their airbag safety probe over another safety concern

    No Inflation

The cause for the now expanded investigation now includes vehicles with airbags that do not inflate during a crash. These airbags were installed by ZF-TRW and include vehicle makes such as Toyota, Kia, Honda, Mitsubishi, Fiat Chrysler, and Hyundai. The models of cars affected are from the years 2010-2019 according to an article by 9 News.

    Electrical Signals

Upon investigation, it is found that extra electrical signals damage the control circuit of the airbag, effectively disabling it. This causes the bag to not inflate during a crash.

    Recall Expanded

Airbags have already had their share of recall issues, with the Takata airbags already having been recalled due to shrapnel issues. With the ZF-TRW airbags being added to the investigation, they are just one step away from being added to the recall list.
