An internal memo notes that over 2,000 complaints of negative effects as a result of using JUUL products were made in the first three years of the company being in operation. A spokesman for the company gave a response claiming that the overall number of complaints is very low compared to the number of consumers. The FDA discovered the data while reviewing the company’s database during a check back in September of 2018.

Range of Symptoms

The problems individuals are claiming as a result of using JUUL vape products involve discomfort or soreness in the mouth, chills, fever and chills to note a few. One woman noted that using the product caused her throat to bleed and sought medical attention. She was diagnosed with a burned throat as a result.

Issues with individuals having the nicotine leak into their mouths while using the product is also a problem. These amount for about 12 percent of total complaints by consumers. Some individuals report feeling sick after unintentionally consuming the liquid.

Questions Remain

As vaping continues to become more and more popular, there are still concerns over the safety of the products. This is especially important with how vaping has become widespread with youth and teens. Health officials are continuing to question how the liquid used in vape products impacts an individual’s long term health, in light of the vaping illness that swept the nation.

Boulder County Joins Federal Lawsuit Against JUUL

[:en]Boulder County is joining a federal lawsuit against e-cigarette company JUUL, the Boulder Daily Camera reports.

Misleading and Affecting Youth

According to the article, the county is joining the multi-district litigation (or MDL) lawsuit against the company which brings together both individual and state claims under one suit. The suit revolves around the claim that the marketing practices JUUL used were made to appeal and target teens and youth and has contributed to the nationwide epidemic of teen vaping.

Vaping A Big Hit in Boulder

Boulder County has said they have seen a big rise in teen and youth vaping around the area. The board of commissioners for the county released a statement that “as community leaders, we feel it is essential to take a stand against JUUL’s practices of promoting the use of their tobacco products to young people in our community.”

The city council has also taken steps to help curb vaping in the community. Flavored vape and nicotine products are now banned, and the age to buy vape and or nicotine products has been raised to 21. Other cities such as Louisville and Broomfield have also raised the age to purchase these products to 21.

Report Claims JUUL Brushed Off Warning Signs About Teens Vaping

[:en]A Reuters report that has been released shows JUUL ignored evidence that their product was highly addictive to teens.

JUUL Knew From the Beginning

According to the report, the company spent months creating a new formula that would allow users to be hooked on the product from the first use. Ideas were even proposed to have the device shut off or be disabled after so many uses for a certain period of time, to limit nicotine intake. However, JUUL never decided to use the feature in the final product design.

Marketing to Teens

While the company claims in written responses to questions from Reuters reporters, that they did not intend their marketing to target teens, their marketing tactics tell a different story. Many of their older advertisements featured younger-looking models, and only after controversy and criticism around teens vaping did the company start to move to feature older people promoting their products.

Harmful to Teenagers

While cigarettes are blamed for having toxic chemicals other than nicotine, vaping is now bringing nicotine under a major spotlight. Scientists are focusing on how nicotine impacts the brain development of young teenagers. According to the article, research that has been done shows how nicotine can interfere with brain development in young people, reworking the brain to focus on getting another hit of nicotine vs developing impulse control and other pathways that are crucial to proper brain development.

CDC Finds Vitamin E Acetate May Be to Blame Over Vaping Illness

[:en]A link between vaping and the serious lung issues it can cause may have finally been found. US health officials are claiming a “breakthrough” in the investigation that has led to over 1,000 people being hospitalized with lung injuries as a result of vaping. An article from The Guardian reports that the CDC is claiming that Vitamin E acetate is the possible culprit behind the injuries.

Vitamin E Acetate

Research has shown the presence of the chemical in samples. The ingredient is often used to thin out the THC oil that is present in some illegal vaping products. Dr. Anne Schuchet who is the deputy director of the CDC has pointed to Vitamin E acetate as being “a very strong culprit of concern” but states that more research needs to be done before a conclusion can be drawn.

The illness has brought a lot of attention from the media due to its quick development. Oftentimes symptoms develop rapidly and individuals can be caught off guard as a result. Individuals have reported having symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and even stomach issues such as nausea and vomiting.

THC Also a Factor?

The CDC is also currently looking into whether the presence of THC in certain vaping products is also a reason behind the illnesses. Currently, 85% of those affected with the vaping illness have used vaping products with THC as reported by the CDC.

Investigation Shows High Rate of Vaping in Colorado

An investigation into vaping in Colorado by local NBC affiliate 9News has revealed some frightening news. A state-wide health survey shows that 27% of teenagers in Colorado vape. While the use of traditional cigarettes has decreased among teens, vaping seems to be filling the hole that normal cigarettes have left behind.

Colorado Vaping Dangers

Recently, the side effects of vaping are starting to come to light. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has now reported over 1,000 cases of lung injuries as a result of vaping and 37 deaths. Individuals have been hospitalized with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Many of the symptoms appear to come on rapidly within a short period of time.

The CDC is investigating the source of the illness, with the link possibly being THC. Many of those who have been hospitalized have been found to be vaping with THC and inhaling chemicals that have been used to cut or thin out the THC such as Vitamin E Acetate.

However, not all cases have been found to involve THC so investigators are continuing to explore avenues where THC is not involved at all in the vaping process and how it affects our health.

FDA/CDC Take Vaping Investigation Global

[:en]Investigations into vaping and the serious lung injuries it can cause is going global, USA Today reports.

Cutting Agents in Vaping

According to the CDC’s principal deputy director, Anne Schuchat, the investigation is taking a turn into looking at the supply chain, and if the source of the problem can be identified there. “The supply chain now has a lot of risky products … We know there have been practices around the use of cutting agents to essentially increase the profit from selling cartridges.” Many of the lung injuries surrounding vaping are from vapes in which THC is used.

Vitamin E Acetate

One of the biggest factors that investigators are looking into is Vitamin E Acetate. Vitamin E Acetate is oil is used to thin the THC oil and has been reported to cause severe lung injuries in a number of vape cases.

The CDC is cautioning individuals not to use vapes with THC, as the risk of lung damage can be high.

17-Year Old On Life Support As A Result of Vaping

[:en]A 17-year-old is currently on life support in Dallas, and her doctors are pointing to vape products as the problem.

Vaping for Two Years

According to an article from Fox News, the teen has been vaping for two years as noted by her mother. The teen first started showing symptoms with a fever, however, her condition continued to worsen and she was eventually diagnosed with pneumonia in both of her lungs.

A Dangerous Alternative

Vaping is currently being marketed by product developers like JUUL as a healthy alternative to smoking and has captured the attention of teenagers. Unfortunately, the situation above is starting to become all too familiar. The CDC has reported at least 450 cases of illnesses related to using vape products, as they search for the underlying link. One possible reason that health leaders are looking into, is how chemicals/ oils such as Vitamin E acetate interact and can irritate and inflame the lungs after being heated through the vape device.

JUUL Vape Products: What You Need to Know

[:en]In today’s world we are surrounded by electronics: computers, smartphones, laptops. Even traditional things such as cigarettes have started to see the rise of e-cigarettes and vapes. Vapes are promoted as a healthier alternative to smoking as they do not contain the same toxic chemicals that cigarettes produce when burned. However, vape products have significant drawbacks that can be just as dangerous as regular cigarettes.

What is vaping?

As stated above, instead of burning tobacco and inhaling it, vaping involves inhaling nicotine produced from a battery-operated vape or e-cigarette. Oftentimes, vape pens can come in popular flavors such as mint, cherry, and even watermelon. Popular vape company JUUL markets a wide variety of vape flavors to their consumers.

However, it has been noted that vaping also contains other chemicals that have also been proven to be carcinogens. This is especially concerning as JUUL products are known to contain higher levels of nicotine when compared to other vape products.

Serious Injuries

Just like with regular cigarettes – certain health issues can develop as a result of using vaping products. Lung issues are one of the main problems that can arise with wheezing, shortness of breath, and scarring being some of the symptoms that can pop up as a result of vaping. These can be especially concerning with young adults, as many vape brands like JUUL focus their marketing efforts on the young adult audience. Other issues such as seizures, heart problems can occur as a result of vape use.
