A link between vaping and the serious lung issues it can cause may have finally been found. US health officials are claiming a “breakthrough” in the investigation that has led to over 1,000 people hospitalized with lung injuries as a result of vaping. An article from The Guardian reports that the CDC is claiming that Vitamin E acetate is the possible culprit behind the injuries.
Vitamin E Acetate
Research has shown the presence of the chemical in samples. The ingredient is often used to thin out the THC oil that is present in some illegal vaping products. Dr. Anne Schuchet who is the deputy director of the CDC has pointed to Vitamin E acetate as being “a very strong culprit of concern” but states that more research needs to be done before a conclusion can be drawn.
The illness has brought a lot of attention from the media due to its quick development. Oftentimes symptoms develop rapidly and individuals can be caught off guard as a result. Individuals have reported having symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and even stomach issues such as nausea and vomiting.
THC Also a Factor?
The CDC is also currently looking into whether the presence of THC in certain vaping products is also a reason behind the illnesses. Currently 85% of those affected with the vaping illness have used vaping products with THC as reported by the CDC.

An investigation into vaping in Colorado by local NBC affiliate 9News, has revealed some frightening news. A state-wide health survey shows that 27% of teenagers in Colorado vape. While use of traditional cigarettes has decreased among teens, vaping seems to be filling the hole that normal cigarettes has left behind.
Colorado Vaping Dangers
Recently, the side effects of vaping are starting to come to light. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has now reported over 1,000 cases of lung injuries as a result of vaping and 37 deaths. Individuals have been hospitalized with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, and difficulty breathing. Many of the symptoms appear to come on rapidly within a short period of time.
The CDC is investigating the source of the illness, with the link possibly being THC. Many of those who have been hospitalized have been found to be vaping with THC and inhaling chemicals that have been used to cut or thin out the THC such as Vitamin E Acetate.
However, not all the cases have been found to involve THC so investigators are continuing to explore avenues where THC is not involved at all in the vaping process and how it affects our health.

One of the labs under contract with the FDA that found a positive sample of asbestos in Johnson & Johnson baby powder, has been found to have an individual who is a paid expert witness by Johnson & Johnson.
J&J Defense of Talc
AMA Analytical Services Inc is run by Andreas Saldivar as reported by Reuters. Mr. Saldivar according to the article “has served as a litigation expert on several occasions for J&J since 2017 in its defense against plaintiffs’ claims that asbestos in talc caused their cancers.”
Making Waves in the Courtroom
This news is already making its way into the courtroom, where thousands of plaintiffs have brought claims against Johnson & Johnson over the safety of their talc. Numerous claims state that the company knew about asbestos in their talc, yet promoted it anyway. As a result, individuals who used the talc powder regularly claim that the powder caused them to develop ovarian cancer and/or mesothelioma. A plaintiff’s attorney for a case in Indiana, asked the judge to allow the news to be made known to the jury. As par for the course Johnson & Johnson’s attorneys opposed, however they were overruled by the judge. It remains to be seen how news like this will impact other talc cases going forward.
Different Ways of Testing
J&J has pushed back on the validity of the results, saying that multiple other labs have confirmed that there is no asbestos in their talc. However, it puts the company in an awkward position and could possibly affect the company’s ability to use him as a resource going forward.

Investigations into vaping and the serious lung injuries it can cause is going global, USA Today reports.
Cutting Agents in Vaping
According to the CDC’s principal deputy director, Anne Schuchat, the investigation is taking a turn into looking at the supply chain, and if the source of the problem can be identified there. “The supply chain now has a lot of risky products … We know there have been practices around the use of cutting agents to essentially increase the profit from selling cartridges.” Many of the lung injuries surrounding vaping are from vapes in which THC is used.
Vitamin E Acetate
One of the biggest factors that investigators are looking into is Vitamin E Acetate. Vitamin E Acetate is an oil is used to thin the THC oil and has been reported to cause severe lung injuries in a number of vape cases.
The CDC is cautioning individuals not to use vapes with THC, as the risk of lung damage can be high.

The ripple effect continues for Johnson & Johnson as pharmacy chains CVS, Walmart, and Rite Aid are taking Johnson & Johnson baby powder off the shelves CBS News reports.
The move comes after the FDA found trace amounts of asbestos in a bottle of the powder that was purchased online. This setback is one of the latest that Johnson & Johnson have faced over their baby powder. Numerous legal claims are making their way through the courts against the company, with individuals arguing that J&J knew their talc contained asbestos, which can cause serious medical issues such as ovarian cancer, but continued to push the product to consumers anyway.
J&J on Defense
Johnson & Johnson issued a voluntary recall after the FDA results came out. The company continues to insist that its talc products are safe, and claim that their own independent testing of their product shows proof that their talc does not contain asbestos.

A new scientific study on talcum powder provides additional evidence that the powder may be linked to the development of mesothelioma.
A recent article from Time Magazine, reports on a case study involving 33 individuals that “provides some of the strongest proof yet that exposure to asbestos-tainted talcum powder may cause malignant mesothelioma.” Mesothelioma is a type of terminal cancer that invades the inner lining of lung tissue.
Influence in the Courtroom
A law professor at Rutgers commented to Time that this study could potentially boost the claims of plaintiff’s filing lawsuits against companies like Johnson & Johnson, who are facing legal claims that their talc contains asbestos. Asbestos is a known factor in causing the development of the cancer.
No matter what happens, one of the co-authors on the study Jacqueline Moline, mentioned to Time that she hopes above all else that the results help bring the issue of asbestos in talcum powder and talc based products to a greater light and that “anything you use on your body or in your body, you want to be careful [about].”

Another settlement deal in the opioid epidemic may be on the horizon between pharmaceutical distributors, a developer, and the federal government.
Trial Set to Begin Today
The first day of the trial was set to begin this morning in U.S. District Court in Cleveland, Ohio. The claims were brought against distributors such as AmerisourceBergen according to an article from Denver 9 News. Some defendants were left out of the deal, like distributor Henry Schein and popular pharmacy brand Walgreens. At this time, it is unknown if the trial will still go forward.
A Different Angle
This trial is set to look at the opioid crisis in a different way. Instead of focusing solely on pharmaceutical developers and their marketing of opioids, this trial looks at how distributors of these drugs also contributed to the epidemic. The article also mentioned how pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma recently came to a possible settlement agreement with the federal government last month. The agreement has the potential to be worth up to $12 billion, however may be reworked due to the company now having filed for bankruptcy.

Johnson & Johnson is currently undergoing a voluntary recall with some of its baby powder products, after FDA testing showed signs of asbestos in the product.
FDA Finds Samples Positive for Asbestos
According to a Reuters article, the bottle that originally tested positive for asbestos was purchased online and is thought to be from a batch made in 2018. As of now the number of bottles being recalled are listed at 33,000. Johnson & Johnson have launched their own investigation and are working with FDA officials to determine if the percentage of asbestos found in the samples is an accurate and valid result.
Johnson & Johnson is facing thousands of legal claims by plaintiffs who that the company’s talcum powder products are not safe and have caused individuals to be diagnosed with mesothelioma as well as ovarian cancer. A bombshell report was released by Reuters last year that details the company knew their talcum powder contained asbestos since at least the 1970’s, yet continued to market the product to the general public as being safe to use.
With the battle heading to the courtroom, Johnson & Johnson has found itself on the losing end multiple times when it comes to talcum powder verdicts. It remains to be seen how this recall can affect current and potential talc cases against J&J going forward.

Johnson & Johnson have been hit with another loss in the latest talc trial case that took place in California. The jury found the company’s talc to be responsible in causing a woman’s mesothelioma diagnosis. The verdict was for $40 million dollars in damages according to a press release about the verdict from PR Newswire.
Contaminants found in Baby Powder
According to evidence, medical testing done on the plaintiff, Nancy Cabibi showed that she has the presence of two types of asbestos. Both types were found to be in Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower products, that Ms. Cabibi has used.
A String of Trial Losses
Johnson & Johnson has been at the center of legal defeats over their talc products in recent months. In New Jersey, plaintiffs were awarded a verdict of $37 million dollars, and another $29 million dollars also out of California.
