What are the details of the lawsuit?

The fast food franchise Jimmy John’s has been served with a lawsuit over a salmonella outbreak according an article posted by Verdict Food Service. The outbreak began in late December of 2017 and continued through early January 2018 as reported by the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.  According to the article by Verdict Food Service, the claim was filed by food safety law firm Marler Clark in regards to their client, Kathleen Navis. Ms. Navis became ill with the bacterium Salmonella Montevido after consuming a sandwich known as “The Beach Club” at a Jimmy Johns in Wisconsin. The sandwich contained sprouts contaminated with the bacteria.

What causes salmonella? What are the symptoms?

Salmonella infection occurs when an individual consumes raw, improperly handled or under cooked food that contains the bacteria. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) lists symptoms of salmonella infection as causing “diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days and most persons recover without treatment.” However in the case of Ms. Nevis, after eating the sandwich on December 18th 20187  she eventually had to seek medical attention on January 8th 2018, where she was diagnosed with the bacterium.

Furthermore the CDC announced an investigation in January spanning across several states in the Midwest in Illinois, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. They discovered ten cases of Salmonella Montevido, including Ms. Navis’ case. This recent sprouts outbreak is not new for Jimmy Johns, the company has experienced multiple incidents regarding this type of outbreak dating back to 2008. This most recent incident however, has prompted Jimmy John’s to stop carrying sprouts temporarily nationwide as reported by Newsweek.
