The federal judge in San Francisco who has overseen past federal lawsuits involving the glyphosate product Roundup has ordered its manufacturer Bayer AG to begin mediation with a plaintiff.
Cancelling Trial Date for Mediation
According to an article posted by The Detroit News (via Bloomberg), U.S. Federal District Judge Vince Chhabria cancelled an upcoming trial date set for May 20, 2019 commenting that resources are better spent in mediation rather than trial. However there is a chance that if the parties are unable to agree on a settlement, a trial could be back on.
Refusing to Settle
Bayer AG who is the parent company of Monsanto who makes Roundup have come out publicly saying that they will not settle with plaintiffs, even as the number of pending Roundup cases has hit upwards of 10,000.
A Dangerous Product
Many people have filed lawsuits against Bayer AG claiming that their exposure to Roundup has caused them to develop non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a very serious form of cancer. There have been notable wins for plaintiffs: among them Dewayne Johnson who received a $289 million dollar verdict at the state level (read more about his case here). At the federal level, plaintiff Edwin Hardeman won an $80 million dollar verdict (get more details on his case here).

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced on April 16th, 2019 that they are halting and banning the sale of all pelvic mesh devices over safety concerns.
Safety Not Assured
According to an article by CNN a statement was released by the FDA that highlighted the fact that the administration “has determined that the manufacturers Boston Scientific and Coloplast have not demonstrated a reasonable assurance of safety and effectiveness for these devices.”
These devices were originally created to help with a condition known as pelvic organ prolapse, where weakened muscles in the pelvic area cause the pelvic organs to drop creating a bulge. It was in the early 2000’s where the first pelvic mesh product was created to treat this issue.
Overhauling Medical Device Testing
In late November 2018 the FDA announced it would be reworking its medical device testing process (read more about the changes here). The announced change came on the heels of a massive report released to the public worked on by journalists all across the globe. The journalists looked into the medical device process and found massive amounts of injuries, corruption, and fraud (view the report here).

Major changes have occurred with the board of directors for pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma, who are best known as being the developers behind the powerful prescription drug OxyCotin.
No More Family Ties
As of the beginning of 2019, Purdue Pharma no longer has any Sackler family members on its board of directors. According to a statement released to the public by the company included in an article by the Stamford Advocate due to “the (2017) passing of (Purdue co-founder) Dr. Raymond Sackler accelerated that transition, and the board no longer includes any family members.”
Shift in Approach
The influence the Sackler family has had over the direction of Purdue Pharma has been significant, as noted by the shocking Reuters report that was released that talked about the company’s aggressive marketing tactics involving OxyCotin (read more about that here). The shakeup of the board illuminates the possibility that the company is looking at a different direction in the face of serious legal action that has been brought against the company.
Several states have brought lawsuits against Purdue Pharma stating that their marketing strategy and desire for money despite knowing the risks that their product OxyCotin carried, helped create a national opioid epidemic (read more about the lawsuits here). The company also recently announced a massive settlement with the state of Oklahoma (get more details here).

In Virginia one family got quite a shock when it came to the price of a medical emergency transportation bill for their son to the tune of $40,000.00.
The Medical Emergency
Joseph Penrod’s son needed urgent medical care after he accidentally swallowed prescription medication. After his wife called poison control, they instructed her to get him to an ER as fast as possible. However the ER they brought him to “suggested that they were not appropriately equipped to deal with that particular age of patient in that particular condition,” according to Penrod when discussing the issue with CBS News.
A $40,000 Transportation Cost
As a result, Mr. Penrod’s son was moved to a different medical facility by air ambulance. Even though Mr. Penrod’s insurance paid for the emergency room care, the Penrod family was stuck with a bill for $40,000 for the air ambulance. More often than not, air ambulances are considered to be out of network for an individual’s coverage due to many being independent contractors, leading costs to skyrocket into the thousands.
A Devastating Blow
Mr. Penrod said the cost “would have destroyed us financially.” After fighting for almost a year over the bill Mr. Penrod reached a deal to pay $1,000.
A new Virginia law became effective on March 1, 2019 that now gives patients the ability to decide if they want to take an air ambulance in an non-emergency situation, as well as making hospitals be more upfront about costs. Colorado is no stranger to this situation, with an in-depth article by The Denver Post on the use of air ambulances in Northern Colorado discussing how the cost can range from $10,000 to upwards of $50,000 or more depending on the circumstances.
