  • Monsanto Corp who is the company behind the herbicide product Roundup, has been slapped with a $2 billion dollar verdict after a jury found the product to be responsible for the diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in an elderly couple who are in their 70’s.

    Less Than Two Days

It took less than two days for the jury to come to their decision according to an article by the San Francisco Chronicle. The jury awarded each individual (Alva and Alberta Pilliod) $1 billion dollars in punitive damages. Other damages were also given out for pain and suffering.

    Paying Up

This is not the first time Monsanto (which is owned by parent pharmaceutical company Bayer AG) has been hit with large verdicts involving Roundup. Dewayne Johnson a California groundskeeper and Edwin Hardeman were each awarded $289 million dollars in state court and $80 million dollars in federal court respectively in their cases against Monsanto.

Shareholders at a recent meeting voiced their displeasure with the Bayer AG CEO over his handling of purchasing Monsanto, noting they felt significant legal risks were overlooked with the Roundup product.
