Taxotere and Hair Loss: A Serious Issue

What is Taxotere?

Taxtore (also known by its generic name docetaxel) is a type of chemotherapy drug that has been used to treat breast cancer as well as other types of cancer. The drug is given in an IV form and is a part of the taxanes family.

What is the risk of using it?

Pharmaceutical company Sanofi – Aventis who is the developer of the drug sent out a press release in 2007 highlighting the benefits of Taxotere when used in a clinical study. Sanofi – Aventis did not make known to the FDA, consumers, and health care workers that permanent hair loss was a side effect noted in patients who took the drug. The FDA released a statement in December of 2015 disclosed that they had required Sanofi-Aventis to modify Taxotere’s label to include the risk of permanent hair loss. Even though hair loss during chemotherapy treatment is a common side effect, those patients receiving Taxotere for chemotherapy were not informed that their hair loss could be permanent.
