Think Before You Text: Tech and Distracted Driving
Technology and vehicles have come a long way since their beginnings. Today we can chat, play music, get directions all via devices in our car or on our phones. However is technology hurting our attention spans? With distracted driving laws and crashes occurring frequently (see supporting data from the CDC), here are some things to think about before you go to send that text.
Hold off on Texting
While it may seem like only a second to send off a quick response to someone, that second could be the defining factor between ending up in an accident or avoiding one. Consider sending texts before you start driving and turn on your “Do Not Disturb” feature so you aren’t tempted to check when you receive a notification.
Plan Out Your Route
If you are travelling to a new destination, consider putting in the address into your GPS before you start driving. Even if you know most of the way there, it’s better to have your route planned out in advance instead of scrambling to put in the address while driving. If you are using your phone, consider investing in a car mount so your eyes can stay focused on the road instead of down at your phone.
Be Aware
Even with hands free technology, it can be easy to become distracted. Think about keeping conversations short when you are driving and/or set up a feature to let the individual know you are driving if they call and that you will return their call when you are at your destination.
